Motivation questionnaire for receiving support
Why would a person with a mild intellectual disability want to seek and receive professional support? This questionnaire helps to identify a person’s motivation for seeking and receiving additional support from a healthcare professional. This questionnaire recognizes six types of motivation.
Therapists and other healthcare professionals can complete the questionnaire together with the person with a mild intellectual disability to gain insight into their specific motivation behind seeking and receiving support. If individuals feel they are receiving professional support because they ‘have’ to (either pressured by themselves or by the people around them), the results of the questionnaire can serve as a useful facilitator of discussion around how the individual can begin to see support as more valuable and important to them. A psychologist commented “I’m very happy with the questionnaire. It helps us find out why an individual is seeking support. If it turns out that they don’t necessarily want support themselves, we can look into creating an environment to encourage them to change their perception.”
The questionnaire measuring motivations for receiving support is based on research investigating the quality of the measure. The items are based on theory and were formulated in collaboration with an expert-by-experience in such a way that they are understandable and meaningful to people with intellectual disabilities.
